I have a two year old Cocker Spaniel, Benjy, who had never been to the groomer let alone clipped. After being neutered, his coat was very difficult to manage, so I decided to have him completely clipped off.
On arriving at Cottage Grooming both Benjy and I were put at ease. Whilst chatting with Kate about Benjy's personality he was have a good exploration of the groom room.
Once on the table Kate showed me how to support and encourage Benjy. This worked a treat and both Benjy and I left feeling very happy and upbeat. It was nice to share the experience with him.
I feel that Kate’s knowledge of the Hemene approach is key to a happy experience for both dog and owner.

Makes all the difference

My toy poodle, Loki, is two years and eight months and has been groomed by Kate since he was 3 months old. He was separated too early from his mother and struggles with reactivity and separation anxiety. Kate has worked wonders with him from the word go; her kindness and sensitivity immediately put him at ease and helped him to form a strong relationship with her when he was a puppy. She won his trust by acclimatising him, at his own pace, to the salon and treatments and tailored each session to meet his individual needs. She also provided me with invaluable support, visiting my home to see Loki in his natural environment and sharing her knowledge of the Hemene method to help me support him through connection and a sense of safety.

Throughout our journey with Cottage Canine, Kate has provided a holistic experience for both Loki and myself. She has helped me appreciate the difference between sympathising and empathising with him and this has enabled me to bring and leave him at the salon in a more supported way. At each appointment, she couples an expert groom with one-to-one focused care, attuning to Loki’s nervous system to contain his arousal. Her commitment to his wellbeing has helped him develop resilience and he returns to me calm, happy and looking beautiful!
